Description

Life history of the dobsonfly, Protohermes grandis, was investigated in the Metoba River of Nagano Prefecture from 1976 to 1981. From surveys in the field and laboratory it was inferred that this insect takes 3 years to complete its life cycle. Dissections of larval alimentary canals revealed that the dobsonfly preys on larvae of Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera and Diptera (Chironomidae) during immature stages. Mature larva which had passed the 3rd winter and turned dark in body color was observed to leave water for pupation in early summer. The larva creeped under a stone or fallen tree, made up the pupating cellar in the wet earth and then was transformed into pupa. It climed up on various plants near the pupating cellar to undergo the adult eclosion 4 to 5 days after pupation. The adult dobsonfly was proved to be nocturnal and observed to feed on sap of trees as well as small insects.
