Description

We examined variability in morphological characters of 13 Podisma sapporensis populations using several statistical techniques. First, we compared the coefficients of variation (CV) within and among populations. The largest variation was found in fore wing length (WL) both within and among populations. Secondly, we applied canonical correlation analysis to examine the relationship between morphological variation and several environmental parameters. Body length was larger as the altitude and latitude were higher. Thirdly, spatial autocorrelation coefficients (MORAN'S I) were calculated to determine which of selection or random genetic drift is responsible for variability in morphological characters. Autocorrelation coefficients suggested that morphological variation of P. sapporensis resulted from random genetic drift or selection acting in different directions among local habitats.
