Abstract

Plasma filtration with dialysis (PDF) using a membrane plasma separator (Evacure2A10; Kawasumi, Tokyo, Japan), with an albumin sieving coefficient of 0.3, can reduce the consumption of fresh frozen plasma. In addition, PDF potentially provides the therapeutic abilities for not only conventional plasma exchange (PE), but also continuous hemodiafiltration (CHDF). We compared the therapeutic effects of PDF with combined plasma exchange and continuous hemodiafiltration (PE+CHDF), since we experienced PE+CHDF followed by PDF in a pediatric case with liver failure. Our data showed PDF was useful for coagulation factor supplementation therapy and could eliminate bilirubin from the parenchyma and interstitium as well as PE+CHDF. The present findings and benefits suggest the potential for PDF as a novel option for artificial liver support and benefit for health economics.
