Description
Urinary infection in patients with catheter-free cutaneous ureterostomy was investigated. Urine in the renal pelvis was obtained through a stoma with a single lumen catheter (SLC) or an "specially made" double lumen catheter (DLC). Pyuria, bacteriuria and Antibody Coated Bacteria (ACB) were examined in urine both in the renal pelvis and in the pouch. Bacteriuria was unexpectedly proved in some of renal pelves in these patients. Bacteria resided in renal pelvis were thought to be of little value in urinary infection, because many of the bacteriuria were not accompanied with pyuria and positive ACB. It is advisable and important to collect urine in the renal pelvis by catheterization technique through a stoma rather than to use urine in the pouch in order to detect the organisms in urinary infection. A single lumen catheter is thought as useful as a double lumen catheter and has an advantage of simpleness over the other.
