Description
Symmetry is a very important feature for various shapes in the shape recognition and in computer graphics shape modeling. In this paper, we focus on the mirror symmetry of a 3D object that is expressed as a set of unorganized points. By deciding whether the object has such symmetry or not, and by detecting the position and the direction of the plane of the symmetry, we can construct the model of the object more accurately. Our algorithm cut a 3D object with any plane which passes through the center of the gravity of the object, and then decide the plane of the symmetry based on the extrema of cross section area.
