Description
This paper proposes a fine grain protection mechanism using a cache line as a protection unit. Protection management is based on a software-controlled cache. The proposed mechanism does not employ an independent protection ache but utilizes existing Translation Lookaside Buffer and data/instruction caches. The use of existing structures reduces the amount of necessary resources. Moreover, since they are used for protection hierarchically, the management overhead of protection caches is decreased. The proposed mechanism enables threads to access exclusive devices like I/O devices safely and fast. It can the false sharing in a software-controlled distributed shared memory system. It can also be utilized to construct single-address-space systems and object-oriented operating systems.
