Description

Subjects were first presented with face-voice pairs at study. Face and voice recognition were then tested separately in the presence or absence of a congruent on incongruent other-mode context. Results indicated no evidence of a facilitatory effect of either an original face or voice context on voice or face recognition. However, "hits" in both face and voice recognition were inhibited by incongruent other-mode contexts. Voice recognition was comparable to face recognition in hits, but subjects were less confident of their decisions on voices than on faces. They were far more successful and far more confident in rejecting new faces than new voices. Particularly worrisome is the subjects' tendency to wrongly accept a new voice as old when the foil was presented alone. These results are discussed in terms of the degree to which face and voice might be integrated in memory at an earlier stage of learning to recognize an unfamiliar person.
