Description

The telephone box that the present writer designed while a third-year student at Tokyo University of Art was affectionately called "a crane box", proved that it could play a role in the realm of the landscape of public design and became the first example of urban design known as street furniture. In addition, with the appearance of "a daruma- shaped public telephone" with a highly efficient handset, the box became the new equipment necessary for a public life. The English telephone box ( the telephone kiosk K 2 ) came into the world in 1924 ( in the 13th year of Taisho ).Ever since it has become the standard model of the telephone box in England despite many attempts at change. This means English people possess a high understanding of public design and take a serious attitude toward high quality. In this paper it has been considered what form of public design should be taken in the near future by comparing the creation and evolution of the public telephone and box both in England and in Japan.
