Abstract

We claims that Shogi (Japanese Chess) is the promising target for the study of AI next to chess. Shogi is much more difficult than chess for computers. A noticeable difference between Shogi and chess is that in Shogi a player can reuse pieces which he captured from his opponent. Owing to this particular rule, Shogi has different informational properties from chess. The average branching factor of chess is only about 35. We have found that the average branching factor of shogi is about 80 and the branching factor exceeds 100 in the endgame of Shogi.
