Description
We are developing a gauge change system for through-operation between Shinkansen lines (standard gauge) and narrow-gaugen lines. A Gauge Change Test Train (GCT) was completed in 1998 autumn to confirm the basic efficiency of this system. The GCT is an experimental 3-motor-car electric multiple unit (EMU) train. It is designed to be able to run at a maximum speed of over 300 km/h on Shinkansen lines, and over 130 km/h on conventional lines under a catenary voltage of AC 25 kV, 20 kV (50/60 Hz) and DC 1.5 kV. It has been under an endurance test for high speed running at the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, U.S.A. since 1999 spring.
