Description
Optical interconnects will resolve the "interconnection bottleneck" in designing ATM switching systems and massively parallel processor systems, based on high speed synchronous parallel transmissions. Recent activities are focused on mainly optical interconnects using 1.3-μm low-threshold current LD arrays, whose reliability was confirmed in communication systems, and 850 nm vertical cavity surface emitting LD arrays, which are expected to realize inexpensive moduies. These interconnects should be fully DC-coupled, error-free (extrapolated BER < 10^<-20>), low power consumption and compact. Optical interconnects are now commercialized and cost reduction is a main issue.
