Description

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of Swiss typography on the Japanese SD magazine. This architecture magazine carryed various progressive cultural topics. The visual character was also somewhat radical, because of its prominent adoption of horizontal typesetting. In the period from 1965 to 1985, four designers designed, such as Kohei Sugiura. Shukuro Habara worked as "designe editor" in the last period. His design method was clearlly influenced by Swiss typography. I pointed out the following three character as the evidences : 1) grid derived from Karl Gerstner's grid for Capital ; 2) house rule for the use of figure ; 3) typesize of mathematical relationship between heading and main text.
