Abstract
Several compounds of lithium nickelate was examined as inexpensive and abundant positive electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Their discharge characteristics were mostly affected by the amount of nickel in the lithium layer of the layered structure of LiNiO_2. When synthesized by a novel synthetic process, called "excess lithium method", the product has little nickel in the lithium layer and showed a discharge capacity of 1.5 times larger than that of conventional material LiCoO_2 Its cobalt substitutives exhibited an excellent charge-discharge cycle performance. Lithium-ion batteries with these nickelate electrodes are promising as high energy-density power sources.
